in many ways of governor christie in new jersey, sort of metaphorically putting his arm around the president, telling him what a great president he was. last thing you would have expected say two weeks ago. what did you make of that? >> i thought it was a fair appraisal. look, governor christie and new jersey has a real problem. jersey shore devastated, plus all the electric outages and problems throughout a large part of the state. of course governor christie needs help. this is what happens when governors need help, they come to washington. and americans expect washington to help. there is a role for the commander in chief, for the president of the united states, when disaster strikes at home. that's what americans expect of their leader. >> were you pleased that the marathon was canceled? >> yeah. i think it was a smart move. i do. it's been -- new yorkers have been really terrific about this. people downtown in manhattan have been four days without light or power. the streets are dark. it's like sarajevo during the siege in the balkans and the thought of more people coming

. governor chris christie says the damage to the state's beaches is, quote, overwhelming. today, governor christie will tour the devastation with president obama. the republican governor who has campaigned steadily for mitt romney raised eyebrows by praising the president's response to this crisis. we'll take a look at the politics in play. but first, more importantly, we'll focus on the devastation, the damage along the jersey shore. michael holmes is in toms river. that's on the jersey shore. he joins us by phone. very hard to get a live shot out of there right now. michael, describe the jersey shore. what are you seeing? >> reporter: damage in barrier island. it's quite a sight, i can tell you. there's a mile-long queue of emergency vehicles, tractor trailers, four-wheel drive, heavy earth-moving equipment, buses loaded with rescue workers, fire truck, rescue truck, national guard is all here, all lined up on this side of the bridge waiting for the green light to head across and on to those barrier islands you've seen extraordinary pictures of. they're going to go over there, set up a

chris christie who toured the destruction with president obama said some parts of the shore may never look the same again. >> the death toll reached 124 people with 56 in the united states. at least 28 in new york. and close to 5 million customers are still waiting for the power to come back on. >> cnn has the entire disaster zone covered this morning. our correspondents spanned out across lower manhattan and all up and down the jersey shore. >> first, the economic capital of our country is slowly getting back to normal this morning even while facing extreme damage. power outages and people having to walk for hours just to get to work. meantime, another hospital lost generator power in lower manhattan. right now hundreds of people are being pushed out of bellevue after hundreds of others were evacuated yesterday. our dr. sanjay gupta is live at bellevue but first to rob marciano. the governor says there will be no fares for subways, trains and buses but many of the bus and subway lines are still not up and running yet so how limited is transportation now? >> well, i can tell you from

will inspect the disaster scene along with governor chris christie, a top romney supporter. dan lothian is live in washington. good morning, dan. what is the president's message right now to storm victims? >> reporter: well, it really was two-fold. first of all, he wanted to pledge that the federal government would cut through red tape, cut through all the bureaucracy. he said there would be no excuses for inaction. and that federal agencies should really explore all options even leaning on the military if necessary to get the resources to where they need to get as quickly as possible. but secondly, what the president was also trying to reinforce yesterday was kind of uplifting the spirits of those hit by the storm. some of whom have lost everything saying that america is with you, america will help you get back on your feet. and he praised those who have already jumped in and taken action. >> during the darkness of the storm, i think we also saw what's brightest in america. i think all of us have honestly been shocked by the force of mother nature as we watch it on television. at the same time

what's happening there. this is the podium but moments later chris christie will be briefing his state. chris christie holding a press conference here that we'll bring you live here on cnn. a lot of people weren't expecting a storm this late in the season, and now the rush is on to get supplies. some storms already running low. people looking for bottled water, you are finding empty shelves there. look at that boat. trying to get them out and get them safe. despite mandatory evacuations in areas of new jersey, delaware, some people are bound to stay in their homes as they always do. and we know the answer to that, that's a bad idea, right? with me now, general russell honory, you commanded the military in new orleans as a general there, should people prepare differently for this storm than they do, because there are different elements with this, is there a different preparation for this storm? >> we have gone into this storm for the last few years since katrina to encourage people to have a three day's supply of food and water on hand for an event just like this. >> because usually whe

on this story. but what he is following is that new jersey governor chris christy is now saying that people in the affected areas of new jersey, people affected by hurricane sandy can now vote electronically. they can vote by e-mail and they can vote by fax. it is an interesting turn. joe, what are you finding out about this? >> well, it's a very interesting turn, don. as you said, in response to the super storm, the governor has issued a directive. this is for misplaced voters that can submit ballot applications by e-mail or by fax to the county clerk. the clerk sends them a ballot and then they have to return that ballot by about 8:00 p.m. on tuesday. it sounds highly unusual. to some, it may sound off the wall. but the fact of the matter is, in an emergency situation, there is some precedent for it. the united states actually has a program for military and overseas voters to basically do very similar things. so chris christie is taking a page from that pramt aogram and trying to find out how new jersey voters are not disenfranchised. >> joe, i understand it's not just for the people who

christie. the governor surprised many people today when he called the president and i quote outstanding and incredibly supportive. words he probably wouldn't have used at the heart of an election battle last week. governor chris christie joins me from the state emergency command center. governor, thank you for joining me. i watched these extraordinary scenes over new jersey today. really quite unprecedented. i've never seen anything quite like it. have you ever seen anything like this in your lifetime? >> no, i haven't. in fact, piers, today i toured the jersey coastline both by helicopter, and i landed in two spots on the jersey shore. and i can tell you that i have never seen devastation like this in my life. not here in new jersey. you see sights like the seaside heights boardwalk, where the program "the jersey shore" is filmed, the boardwalk is gone. it is gone. amusement rides, a roller coaster, a log flume, in the ocean. it's incredible. homes destroyed. it's an awful thing. >> new jersey people are known for their resilience. they're tough people. you yourself are a tough guy and

to wait and see how that goes. president obama and new jersey governor chris christie are going to tour parts of the state of new jersey tomorrow. atlantic city is obviously on the president's schedule. lorenzo langford is the mayor of atlantic city. he joins us now by phone. mayor langford, your city was truly slammed by this super storm. the boardwalk smashed, areas flooded. please give us a status update. >> well, i think we're coming out of this thing in pretty good shape, believe it or not. our biggest concern at this point is trying to restore power to 1/3 of our residents. once we're able to do that, i'm hopeful state police will open up the roads into atlantic city to allow for passage of our residents who have been moved to higher ground in shelters outside the city to be able to come back in and return to their humble abodes. that's our biggest concern right now. >> were there any casualties? >> we had one casualty. we haven't determined as of yet whether or not it was an atlantic city resident. but one of the shelters where some of our residents had been moved to did realize

along whatever information you can, however you get the information. governor chris christie today described the information at the jersey shore as unthinkable. that's the word he used. it's certainly true. hard to wrap your brain around pictures like these from the national guard. look at that. that's the coastline of seaside heights. houses buried in the sand. sand washed into homes at least 100 yards from the normal high tide line. i spoke with seaside heights mayor, bill acre. what are you contending with tonight? what is the number one priority right now? >> right now, we're just trying to get through the evening. we're trying to secure some diesel fuel to keep the police station running and the borough hall, which is the only building that has the power through the generator right now. we're trying to get over 100 gallons of fuel from the oem right now. that's what we're doing at the time. >> do you -- the pictures are just horrific to look at. do you have any sense of the scope of the destruction? >> i -- i'm glad you have a picture, because if you don't see it, you can't fu

christie is preparing for the worst there, hoping for the best when it comes to this hurricane. he's doing everything possible to get his state ready. allison kosick is in seabright. we know people are bracing for the worst. in what form? >> reporter: they definitely are preparing, especially as you feel this wind get stronger ask stronger as the day goes into night here. look at the ocean. it is certainly getting angry angryer by the minute. i talked to the sheriff here. he said there are two big concerns for this area. he said the wind and the storm surge which is expected to happen tomorrow when the hurricane does come to shore. the big worry is this whole area will flood. his worry is it will flood anywhere from 3 to 4 feet through here. they got a tape ste of this thi morning when high tide happened. over here is seabright, a town where all the stores are, where residents live. they got a taste of high tide. there is a river on the other side of these buildings. it certainly overflowed this morning, gave them a taste of what's to come. it certainly is worrying one store owner i talked

is going to break down how these numbers are calculated and then. christi christine? >> well, the report is two sides of the same coin. think of it that way. the jobs report is two separate surveys. the unemployment rate comes from a survey of 60,000 households and the jobs created survey comes from 141,000 businesses. to get the unemployment rate 2200 census workers interviewed 66,000 households. everyone is over 16 is classified as employed, unemploymented or not in the labor fost. then they extrapolate the rate. the job creation number comes from another sample which is the sample of 141,000 businesses who tell the government how many workers they have on the payroll. like the household survey, the sample is meant to reflect the whole u.s. and includes factories and stores and teachers and schools and both surveys look at a particular pay period, and usually around the 12th day of the month. so this month, it was the week of october 7th to october 13th. households were contacted the following week to find out if they had been looking for work or were looking for a job from the 7th to
